FUNCTIONALITY AND SAFETY
The newly-built, three-level Łódź Fabryczna railway station is the key part of the new Łódź city centre. It took five years to build this multimodal underground station, the largest project of its type in Poland, which combines railway, bus, and city transport. the main area of the station is located on the first level, 8 meters underground, comprising the railway station core with a waiting room, ticket offices, commercial venues, and technical facilities. There is also a multi-stand bus stop and a parking lot for cars and bicycles. The second level located 16.5 meter underground houses the train station with four platforms and eight tracks. The new station can process as many as 200,000 passenger a day.

The primary challenge the train station posed was the protection of emergency egress ways with efficient smoke ventilation, along with reduced smoke concentration at the railway station in the event of a fire in the railway tunnel. To achieve the best result, the Łódź Fabryczna was planned to have more than 1500 m of the automatic Marc-Kda and the fixed Marc-Kds smoke control curtains. The installation of the smoke control curtain system ensures the control of combustion gas and smoke circulation inside the building, creating an effective division of indoor spaces into fire zones and smoke containments. This ensures emergency evacuation and improved passenge safety by controlling the spread of smoke. Throughout the entire Łódź Fabryczna railway station, 4800 m2 of Marc-Kda curtains and approximately 1700 m2 of Marc-Kds curtains were installed. Sub-level 8 of the railway and bus station saw the installation of MARC-Kda class D60 type ASB3 (gravity-assisted) smoke control curtains and type ASB4 (UPS-powered electric drive) smoke control curtains. Due to the risk of a train fire, Sub-level 16 had smoke control curtains installed with a higher class, DH 60, and a suitable wind pressure resistance rating to provide smoke containment between platforms 1 and 2 and platforms 3 and 4. A great challenge was posed by the installation of one of the curtains around the escalators at the bus station. Because there was no installation space to fit an automatic curtain mechanism, a smoke control curtain of glass panes was used.
The flexible structure of the curtain, the simple and easily modifiable design, and the low dead weight allowed a perfect harmony of the product with the interior design, without any need for additional solutions to be installed in the project areas. The curtain system was installed not to obstruct the light source that is the huge skylight B, promoting optimum sunlight exposure of the station’s interior. The lack of dimensional constraints facilitates isolation of very large areas with the modular combination of the smoke control curtains; the length of a single curtain as a closure around the escalators is 40 m.
Each of the three levels of underground parking lots (with approximately 1,000 parking places in total) was divided into 3 fire zones with MARC-P sliding fire doors rated at EI 60 and EI 120. The doors are kept in the open position with e-mag holders wired to the fire control panel. The doors have gravity-assisted closing movement. In the event of a fire alarm, the fire control panel releases the e-mag holder and the door leaf closes the passage between the fire zones. Emergency exit man doors are installed in some of the doors. The doors are opened manually.
